I always like the idea of ‘working from home’, but now I’ve discovered something even better…
‘Working from the library’
(That’s the public library, not one of the rooms in my mansion house.)
It’s brilliant!
It gets me out of the house which is important to my sanity.
Two years into being a stay at home dad is a little late in the day to be realising this, but still, I know better now.
To be fair, I didn’t have much opportunity to do this until now, but now my youngest daughter is at playgroup five mornings a week, I have more freedom.
Coming to the library feels a little like I’m at work. I’m here to focus and achieve results without the distractions at home.
This fits very nicely with my latest thing of taking ‘massive action‘.
What that really means is I’ll write my ass off while I’m at the library and then I’ll clean like a demon when I get home.
Both jobs will get done without bleeding into each other.
Another benefit of coming to the library is my wife and mother in law don’t have to see me tapping away at the computer.
It’s a source of annoyance for them. And I’m not being mean spirited in outing them, it’s just a fact.
They’re not into the internet, or blogging, or Facebook, or Twitter – they just don’t get it.
But anyway, that doesn’t matter now because out of sight is out of mind. What they don’t see, won’t hurt them.
Ah, the library is great! I don’t feel guilty about writing and I’m getting more achieved.
I have made some rookie mistakes though.
I forgot to turn off the damn start up tune on my laptop, confirming my rookie status to the other library users.
Also, I’m sitting in what is probably designated a comfy reading chair which incidentally offers a great view from looking out from a second floor window.
It looked like a good spot before I sat down, but the chair is narrow with high arms and it’s a bitch to type, but I’m sitting here now and I refuse to look like a dumb ass (again) by moving.
I’ll do better next time!
I only wish I’d discovered the library sooner.
Dave
