Weight loss update
I’ve been using ‘one meal a day‘ for a while now to lose weight and it’s been working for me.
Most of it has been trial and error and I’m yet to perfect it. I’ll do a proper write-up of the method soon!
Last week the children were home from school so I didn’t try very hard. According to the scale I’ve put weight back on.
That’s OK though, because that’s how I want it to work even during the process of losing weight.
I don’t have plans to reach a particular weight and maintain that weight forever. I’m happy to over indulge sometimes, but it will always be with the idea that I’ll lose the weight again before it gets out of hand.
My all time heaviest weight was 215lbs, but for most of my adult life I’ve been stuck around 205lbs.
For the last two years I’ve been trying to lose 30lbs of fat and until recently I haven’t done too well.
A bout of sickness and and article about a guy who gets by eating just one meal a day got me thinking about a new approach.
I was amazed at how well my body coped with being ill, even when I couldn’t bring myself to eat for a few days it still found the reserves and resources to fight off the illness.
The guy who lives on one meal a day is a US Army General, so if he can do it, I can do it too.
A couple of weeks ago I got down to 179.6lbs, just 7lbs from my arbitrary goal of 173lbs and 5lbs from the 30lb total weight loss I’ve been aiming for.
I know now that 173lbs (at 6ft tall) won’t see me get flat abs, but once I reach that goal I’ll have a better idea of what needs to be done.
Stats & Stuff:
Monday 7th June 2010 182.4 lbs
Measurements:
Chest 39
Belly 37.5
Waist 36.5
Hips 36.5
Diet:
Several cups of tea with full fat milk and one teaspoon of sugar throughout the day.
1 Banana at midday
A small piece of cheese my daughter left after her lunch and half a breadstick (eating my daughter’s leftovers was cheating but I don’t feel bad about it).
Main meal at 5pm – 2 large new potatoes boiled (and served with butter) with a slice of quiche and a fistful of Broccoli. To finish, a sliced banana with a splash of fresh double cream.
It was a really nice meal and well worth the wait.
Exercise:
30 minute walk mid-morning
30 minute walk mid-afternoon
Both times this was dog walking in the woods at a quick pace. I’ve never measured the distance but estimate about 2 miles.
Stats:
Tuesday 8th June 2010 180.2 lbs
Pictures:
Yes, I’ll take some pictures every week but I’m toying with the idea of publishing them only in a weekly newsletter – once I work out how to do it.

As I’ll continue to remind you, this is not how I see myself living my life long term, it’s simply a means to an end.
Like I said, I’m yet to perfect what I’m doing but it seems to be working. I haven’t seen measurements like the ones above for years and even putting on 2lbs recently hasn’t made a dent in them.
I want to use this blog to chart my progress as I lose the rest of the fat to reaching 173lbs and maybe beyond as I try for flat abs at 41, I hope you’ll join me.
Dave
