Welcome!
Selfish Blogger is my response to the ‘Blog Burnout’ I suffered earlier this year.
I gave up blogging when it started to take a toll on my marriage and personal relationships and I wrote about it at Teach My Children.
All is well now. Balance has been restored and I’m happy to declare that I’M BACK.
I’ve missed blogging tremendously but I know that if I’m to come back and remain I have to fit blogging around my life – not the other way around.
Whether or not anyone cares to admit it, there’s a tremendously crushing expectation of reciprocity amongst bloggers. It doesn’t start out that way but eventually the pressure to keep up with the reading and commenting merry-go-round becomes overwhelming. Well, it did for me, and I suspect it’s true for many more.
I want to maintain an online presence but I can’t invest in blogging the way I did before.
I’ve switched off the comments on this blog, and my reading of other blogs will be very limited. I’ll be doing the bulk of my connecting through Twitter and if you want to catch up with me, then that’s the best place to do it.
I’ll be blogging about whatever takes my fancy and whenever I feel like it – it could be five times a day or once a month… and because I’m not setting out to build a readership based on publishing high quality content for a niche market, I won’t feel guilty about being so haphazard.
The deal is… I’m here if you want to know what’s going on with me but beyond that, there’s no real plan.
Although I’ve switched off the comments you can still respond to me by clicking the Twitter link at the bottom of each post. It’s set up so that it opens Twitter and automatically inserts @DaveFowler and the (shortened) URL of the post (so I know what you’re responding to) – then you can fill out the remaining characters with gay abandon.
Basically this is my personal blog and an experiment to see whether it’s possible to maintain blogging relationships whilst being a selfish blogger. Only time will tell.
It’s good to be back.
See you on Twitter.
Dave.
